You’re thinking about getting into the culinary industry but you’re not entirely sure you’ll be able to cope once you’re in there? Here are a few ideas on how to go about it.

1. Find What You Love. COLD, HOT, and PASTRY. The 3 basic sections in a restaurant kitchen. Although stereo-typically, the pastry section is known as the “women’s section”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s where you belong. You could find your love in the hot kitchen, by the pass, sweating bullets (it gets really hot in there), cooking the food that you love. Italian? French? English? Whatever cuisine it is you love to cook. Find what you love and do it!

2. Give ’em Heat! When you have truly found what you love, this would be the time to serve flames (not literally). This would be the time you showcase yourself, so to speak. You’re showing everyone what you’ve got, your amazing skills! Whether we’re talking about doing brunoise carrots at the prep station or whisking your sugar and eggs until ribbon stage in the pastry section (we all know how much of a workout that is without an electric mixer). Show them what you got!

3. Push The Limits. Ooh that glass ceiling though… Break it!

4. Rise Above The Naysayers. There will always be a few naysayers in certain situations, but that should not tear you down. The culinary industry is quite the male dominated place and every now and then, you’ll find those that aren’t very comfortable with having a lady around. Advice? You’re there for yourself, to grown yourself, to educate yourself further and to improve your skills. Rise above it like the queen you are!

5. Trust Your Gut. This is one important factor in most steps to success. Your gut may be difficult to trust at times but it’s your best step to risk taking, because you’re never 100% sure, right? If you are convinced you absolutely want to be in the culinary field, do so. It may be very difficult but the food would be authentically yours!

  1. I like down home cooking, but then I am willing to try a new version of a cake or pie. I believe we should be bold, and careful. For this reason, my family is treated to the new recipes before anyone else. If they aren’t good, we don’t serve them again.
