It’s been said that we become a sum of the five people we spend most of our time with.

Think about that for a moment…

Who are your five people? Are you horrified at the very thought? Are you shaking your head in denial? Or perhaps you’re proud and comfortable with those that make up your “sum?”

Either way, it puts a lot of weight in the friendships that we choose to consume our free-time hours.

(The titles below are only allegorical examples, for the sake of expressing a type of person, rather than an actual profession/ person as cited)

What they provide: enthusiasm, hope, optimism

When you need them: in those moments we all have, where, no matter how hard you try, you cannot muster up optimism or enthusiasm when that’s exactly what you need to get though whatever you’re facing at that particular moment in life

2. The COACH

What they provide: Occasional tough love, encouragement, a nudge in the right direction, a game plan/ strategy, a reminder that life can sometimes boil down to being  a team sport.

When you need them: When you need someone to call an ace an ace and light the fire under your seat, or when you need a game plan, guidance or a team player’s perspective.

What they provide: A smart approach, when you have one chance to make the right choice – and you’re not quite sure what that is, or when you want to be around someone who brings out the smartest, most articulate version of you.

When you need them: When making big, important decisions,  or choices regarding your career, or anything else  of  importance.

What they provide: Honesty and Truthfulness

When you need them: Anytime you need to hear the honest truth, even of if its hard to hear, or when you feel like your too close to the eye of the storm to make a decision that’s not of clouded judgment.

What they provide: Hope for happy endings and endless love, and for any matters of the heart where it’s best seen with warmth and love.

When you need them: All decisions rendered that call for thinking with one’s heart and not just one’s head.

So taking into consideration the five general types of people we could all benefit from – and simply from their presence alone, think a bit about the effect others have on you, both subconscious and conscious. After pondering this, odds are, you’ll agree there is power in people. Especially those we designate as “our people.

We all know someone who brings out a snobbishness, lazy, dull, worst possible version of ourselves. You know– that person that you leave feeling exhausted, short fused and generally bad, especially as it relates to self-esteem and self-image.

Conversely, we all know someone who brings out the best version of ourselves – that person that when you’re speaking to them, you literally use bigger words without thinking about it. They unintentionally bring out the best you. When you leave them, you find yourself wanting more time together, you’re happy and energized.

So pick your five closest comrades carefully. And forget obligation. You have one shot at life. If you don’t do what’s best for yourself, it’s a sure thing, no one else will either. This is not a dress rehearsal or a dry run. This is real, and time passes fast.

So remember, you are the sum of the five people closest to you. Do you add up to what you want to be your metaphorical total? If not, it’s time to do some considering, cutting, calculating and contemplating.
