One of my son’s friends wore a “Make America Great Again” cap to a sporting event we all recently attended together and it really caught me off guard. Other than the yard signs of crazy, misinformed strangers (and my Father-In-Law…), this was the first time I had literally come face-to-face with “the enemy.” This stirred up a whole pot of turmoil and conflict in my head.

I had met this kid before and I really liked him, as does my son. He seems intelligent, polite, respectful and just…nice. I’d met his parents, albeit briefly. His father seemed like a really nice guy. Gregarious, laid-back guy with a slight Southern drawl that I’d probably enjoy sharing a beer with over some BBQ or wings. His wife seemed really sweet and they both spoke very highly of my son.

How could these seemingly good people have voted for someone who said the things Trump said that have been played and replayed ad nauseam? Could they be spies like in the FX show “The Americans,” so deep under cover even they sometimes forget they work for the Dark Side?

Now keep in mind, this boy and his family are not minorities, disabled, illegal immigrants or any other pockets of the electorate have disparaged (as far as I can tell). But this “moment of truth” reminded me of a few things:

  • Except for those poor, unfortunate kids whose parents are narrow-minded, racist a**holes so they are destined to be narrow-minded, racist a**holes, friends are still friends. – I’ve heard stories about minority students in our high school being yelled at to go back where they came from, which makes me incredibly angry and sad for them. But when I asked my son about the cap, he said he hadn’t even noticed it. I KNOW some of that is teenage boy cluelessness personified, but I also know part of it was none of them really cared. They even joked about it. I hope that’s a good sign for us overall.
  • You can’t judge a book by its cover. – For my son’s friend, his cap had become his cover. I instantly assumed the worst and started to question my impression of him and, honestly, if I wanted my son to associate with him. I had become prejudiced. I was projecting onto him the qualities of who Hillary Clinton really meant as “deplorables.” I was no different from people who assume all black folks like chitlins and watermelon. I DESPISE both. Chitlins taste like they smell (s***) and melon in general is just nasty. Side note to grocery stores, stop mixing melon with regular fruit. Ruins it all…
  • I will fear not.– Some true Jedi Wisdom for you below. If we fear the future, we are angry at those we believe are responsible for it. Then it becomes a little easier to hate someone you don’t even know (or thought you did). Right now we need resolve more than anything else. Resolve to take care of each other just as much as we did one month ago, if not more. Resolve to continue to teach out kids to be good people. Resolve to give things a chance but remain realistic and open-eyed to when things are going wrong.

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” – Yoda

I hadn’t posted anything in awhile because I was doubting if I had anything useful to say. I hope this is useful for someone.

I’m going to end with a little bit of feel good. Check out the video below. The sign says: “I’m Muslim and I’m called a terrorist” … do you trust me? If so, put your arms around me

Don’t be a stranger…
