Breaking into any kind of creative industry can be tough when you work independently. It requires persistence and a willingness to walk the hard road with no clear end in sight.

Yet no matter how determined you are to achieve your goals, willpower can be a fickle thing and can abandon you even when doing the things that you love. Self-doubt can set in unexpectedly, hindering you from working to the best of your ability.

This can be demoralizing and will most likely be damaging to your progress but it’s a common problem and it’s completely normal. Your potential to succeed is not defined by whether or not you feel doubts throughout your journey to success. It’s defined by how you overcome them.

Maintaining the positivity and motivation to continue creating the best content you can is much easier said than done but it is never out of your reach if you follow some simple steps.

Constantly Remind Yourself Why You’re Here.

It’s a long and arduous path that lies ahead of you and that reality will constantly chip away at your motivation if you allow it to. Following your dream isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be and it’s too easy to lose sight of your goal when faced with the trials that block your way to success.

When you surpass those trials however, all that will be left before you is the fruit of your labors and there will be no greater feeling in the world than knowing that you achieved the dream you’ve been following. One of the most crucial things to remember throughout your journey is what’s waiting for you on the other side.

The moment you forget that, this will all begin to feel like another one of those soul-crushing jobs you rejected when you chose to do the thing that you love. That choice was one of the many choices that led you to where you are now. Remember why you made those choices and never let small doubts trip you up on the way. You already know that you’re on the right track, you just need to keep going.

Appreciate Your Efforts

Call me a cynic but I don’t believe in accidental success. There are successful individuals out there that sometimes talk about “their big break,” the defining moment when things blew up and the realization hit them that they were finally achieving their dreams. It could be the Youtuber that talks about their first viral video or the once-unknown actor who got their first leading role in an Oscar winning film.

If there’s someone established in your chosen career path who you look up to that claims they “just fell into it” or “they got lucky” to get where they are today, don’t be fooled for a second. That modesty is admirable but to believe it’s anything but modesty is downright foolish.

Ask yourself why you admire that person so much if all they really did was “get their big break.” The break is over and I’m willing to bet that it’s been over for quite some time now! Chances are their career is still going stronger than ever regardless.

Luck can help to spur you forward but only your hard work and commitment will keep you in the spotlight. The idea that success belongs to a chosen few is not only demeaning to you who is working so hard for it, it’s demeaning to the efforts of those who have already earned it. Success doesn’t shine on those who are lucky, it shines on those who fight for it and it can shine on you!

Never demean your own efforts! They are exactly what will set you apart from those who don’t try and they will most certainly pay off.

Maintain The Balance Between Work and Play

It’s all too easy to pressure yourself into churning out as much content as humanly possible without allowing yourself some R&R. This is the quickest route to burning yourself out and losing motivation for the things you love. The longer you force yourself to create content, the more you’ll see your content dropping in quality.

Balance out your work schedule, space it out appropriately so you’re not just pushing to meet deadlines at the last minute. Don’t spend your breaks doing the same thing over and over again; Those activities will become second nature to you and eventually, your mind will stray back to the next workload you have planned. That’s not what your breaks are for. Switch things up a little and distract yourself. Make sure that your spare time is always “your” time so you can work to the best of your ability later.

It’s just as important that you reward yourself for your efforts as the effort itself is. Treat yourself when you feel you’ve gone above and beyond, it’s not arrogance to recognize a job well done when you see one. If you know you can do better, commit to improving yourself for next time but don’t punish yourself for recognizing that.

Most Importantly: Believe In Yourself

Don’t let yourself be disheartened by the struggles ahead, you’re already well on the way to success. You have the drive to chase down your dream and someday soon you’ll unleash your potential to finally acquire it.

It’s not wrong to doubt yourself, only your true strength and drive will show when you learn to overcome those doubts and press on towards success. The only one truly capable of stopping you is yourself.

Are you really going to let that happen?
