The one thing that separates a true entrepreneur from someone who’s more of a talker than a doer is an entrepreneurial mindset. If you feel like you don’t have access to this resourceful state of mind, the good news is that it can be developed. Here are some tips for cultivating an attitude and belief system that will support your goals, rather than undermine them.
1. Read the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. That classic motivational book captures the essence of what it takes to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Imagine, for example, the effect of saying these powerful words to yourself, every day: “I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life; therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.” That declaration is actually the first part of a five-step self confidence formula that’s contained in the book — specifically, the chapter on cultivating the emotion of faith. Note: Just reading the book once probably will not get you much closer to achieving a high level of success in your business, career, or personal life. It takes much more repetition and mental focus than that to learn and adopt the principles. One of the best ways to assimilate this information is to take copious notes as you’re reading, so that you can distill the techniques and ideas that resonate the most with you. Some people find that taking notes on index cards and storing them in a 3-by-5-inch card file makes it easy to review and reinforce the ideas and techniques on a daily basis.
2. Motivate Yourself. Write down and surround yourself with short motivational sayings, like “Persistence breaks down resistance!” and “Failure is not an option!” Those are great mantras to repeat to yourself and reflect on several times a day.
3. Believe in yourself. Since it’s nearly impossible to succeed in any area of life without strongly believing in yourself, make it a priority to strengthen your confidence, build your self esteem, and be your most ardent supporter.
So whether it’s your objective to start your own business, accumulate wealth, or achieve any other goal in life, remember that the bedrock of all achievement consists of cultivating high-quality thoughts, productive habits, and results-oriented actions.
