You volunteer your time and energy to an organization. You are younger than all of your fellow volunteers. You are really called the, “baby,” of the group but, something is off. You have this suspicious feeling that your age is preventing the seasoned volunteers from seeing you for what your resume and experience says you are: deserving.
Thursday night, all of these feelings came to a heated discussion in the Executive Council meeting for my alumni association. My Alumni president decided, not to attend the national convention in Chicago, two weeks ago. We were going to be left with no representation from our local chapter. I messaged our alumni president and vice chancellor, asking for support for me to attend instead. No sooner did I send the message, than my alumni president calls and cancels her mind of not attending. Not only will she attend, but wants the chapter to cover her travel expenses. She wanted me to step down from going.
Our vice chancellor stated opposition and reminded the president of her suspicious change of heart only weeks later, after I voiced interest. My alumni president was furious! The insults began. This ordained church elder was calling me, her alumni vice president very hurtful name, slandering and calling my character into question. How do you recover from that? Thankfully, I was not alone. Other alumni counsel members witnessed the incident.
- Defend yourself professionally
- Reinterate your position and contribution to your organization or relationship
- Stand tall and do not show fear
- Assert your morals
- Show other people watching the situation, who you are, through your actions
- Do not stoop to the other persons level
- Leave with dignity
- When you get home, then cry it out
In the end, the alumni association did not pay for the president to attend the convention. I will still attend, but pay upfront and I will bring only my receipts for my airfare. I will pay the rest. Thus, saving my alumni association over a thousand dollars. You never win, when you play dirty! Always leave an argument with class and dignity.
