5 Ways to Reduce Your Distractions with Technology (2 min read)

Technology has made our day today lifer easier in so many ways. Especially in the area of sending a message to someone. Unlike the days when one had to wait for two weeks to get a message across to someone in another state. Now we can do that by simply poking at a screen and pressing a few buttons.

I get distracted easily, I haven’t yet mastered the art of staying focused, but who really wants to be that focused and serious all the time, it would be boring. We all have that one digital device that distracts us from what we ought to be doing, for me it is my phone. There is so much you can do on one little device.

My phone is my biggest distraction in the world/ universe. Over time I have found out that I spend most part of the day on my phone, instead of blogging, researching, studying I end up on social media. This forced me to come up with a few techniques that have really helped break the connection I have with my phone. They have really helped me a lot when it comes to productivity.

If you are like me, you find yourself easily distracted by technology, so in general, you might find these tips helpful.
1. Set a limit on emails and social media checks. Social media, in general, is a major distraction. The urge to know what your friends are doing, the kind of pictures they just uploaded can be overwhelming. One way to combat this is to set a limit to how you check your social media page. Instead of checking what is new every 5 minutes, you can check every one hour, with time, you can increase the number of hours you stay off social media.

2. Do not open more than 3 tabs in your browser. Doing too much at a time you end up doing nothing, this is also applicable to the use of the internet. When making use of your browser try to ensure that you have only 3 tabs, it will cut back the time you will spend shuffling from one tab to another.

3. Sign out of chat or hide. Most social media page automatically signs you in on chat when logged it, letting people know you are online. You might end up spending more time than expected to reply to a message from friends and acquaintances. Signing out of chat or hiding your online visibility can reduce the number of unnecessary message requests you will receive.

4. Adjust or turn off your notifications. My Facebook account used to notify me when I received a new message even when offline until I turned it off. This always prompted me to log in just to reply a message. Personally, I feel this is an amazing feature when you are expecting a message from someone. But when trying to reduce technical distractions this is unadvisable.

5. Go into airplane mode. Most phones if not all phones have this feature. I find this feature really helpful when I am in an important meeting or when I want to spend some quality time with myself. No calls. No texts, no notifications.
