Do you write for yourself? Do you write for others? Do you write to write? Do you write about writing? You know, I see these questions often intertwined in posts with listicles offering advice for those of us that like to write. My intent is not to address the Why, What, When, Who and How of writing. My intent is to entertain what transpires after our post publishes for all the world to see.
Let’s jot down a 4 pointer listicle of some of the reasons we write.
- We write for ourselves because it’s satisfying
- We write for others because it’s fulfilling
- We write for others because it’s our job
- We write about writing
So we stampede our mind and say what we want to say with the hope that others read our work. I believe most of us want our publications read. I know that I do! Yet, some writers may jot down their thoughts for their eyes only. Perhaps, as a personal release of feelings.
Then, here’s the “Okay, someone read my post because I got a thumbs up!” Well, hallelujah! But, it’s way too easy to click the “like” button, isn’t it? I guess getting a “like” is better than zip and not all platforms have a “dislike” or thumbs down option. Anyway, getting a “like” doesn’t mean the post got true attention. It’s like entering an elevator and the buttons to all floors are lit up because of someone’s foolery. Don’t you just hate that?!
Why did you not leave a comment? For those of us who like to write, we appreciate your comments. Your opinions are important as they help us improve and learn. I don’t necessarily mean learning by a comment informing of a misspelled word. I mean a comment where you I and/or other commenters engage in conversation. IMHO, this is a great way to mingle and get to know people.
And while I am on the subject of commenting, let’s be respectful to one another. Blogging is diverse from all aspects. I mean, just think about the many different cultures of the world that put the pen to the paper. If we disagree, so what! We are uniquely formed individuals with varying EVERYTHING. You have to have your head in the sand if you believe we are going to have the same thoughts relating to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!
The message that I want to convey is to leave a sincere and worthwhile comment after reading another writers post. Don’t just leave a one-word comment like cool or phfttt, elaborate a little. Show the writer you read their post by engaging with them. You’ll be a better person for it.
We write to write
We’re not necessarily right
But, don’t prove us wrong
Hey, it’s not your song
If the leave is just a “like”
I get a little uptight
So say what you want to say
And we’ll call it a day
Cheers!

For the longest time, I have been writing just to let out my thoughts and it is only later that I realized I have to engage in a community of writers and bloggers if I wanted others to be inspired by my posts. Thanks for reminding me! 😉

This is impacting. There are uncountable likes without reading the post. The comment most times show that at least, the post is scanned through.

You are absolutely right! When a person comment on my post, I feel this kind of satisfaction and pleasure, as a writer I wanted to connect to my readers as well as interact with them, I really hope that will engage more and interact more ’cause that’s what I love.
