Seeing the title, most of you would guess it’s about death.

Well it’s not, for once.

When I was a young chap, going down the streets of my parent’s flat felt like ages. It was a maze of tall, similar buildings with the smell of cements, wet paint, and foliage by the side.Everyday was an adventure, going from blocks to blocks, finding hideouts and shortcuts for whatever I may find threatening. (Such as : massive dogs, strangers)

A pile of sand was all a kid needed back then.

Sure, then high school came, bringing along one thing we secretly refuse to acknowledge its existence. Pride. (And many more)

Going again, I have no desire to venture anymore. The flat has become bigger with additional blocks risen among the cleared bushes. My mind map of the place now contains only 3 things, midnight convenience store, restaurant and the house. The pile of sand turned into buildings, the stream of water turned sewage system, and plane where I used to ran around barefooted was now tarmac.

I see so many changes, not just in me, but my surroundings. With my mom’s grey hair, the cracks on the walls, the sounds by the pipes, marriage invitations, birthday greetings, and transformation pictures (people still do that?).

What I like yesterday doesn’t make me who I am today. I did. Why should we fear the future if the future us would relate so little to the ‘us’ before.

I’ve heard that the connections between you, now, and a complete stranger, anywhere in the world, is greater than between you right now and the past.

What’s inevitable isn’t death. It’s change.
